A rough looking estate pub. At first look, the covered windows and lack of cars outside make it look closed, but venturing a closer look, it was very much open. It sits on the edge of a housing estate noted for its frequent attention from the local constabulary, and the pub itself once had quite a bad reputation. Today, however, thanks to some robust management from the landlord, it is a functioning community boozer although still a bit battered. There is a concrete frontage which forms a car parking area. Inside, there is a large public bar, irregular in shape, with shabby furniture and very Spartan décor. There is a smaller bar at the side with a pool table. No music was playing, and there seemed to be no other electronic distraction. Two tame timber wolves roam the pub, both very friendly and playful, but probably not worth messing with. The landlord was incredibly welcoming, very knowledgeable and took great pride in his beer – the only ale on was Cotleigh, which was beautifully kept and in perfect condition. The clientele were welcoming enough, and despite the hint of menace lurking in the background, we felt relatively safe. I’d be happy to come here anytime for a beer, especially given that the landlord goes to great lengths to run a good pub, but not sure I’d risk including on a crawl.
