A rather ordinary roadside pub currently owned by Punch Taverns. It remains laid out as described by Graham, below, while the dart room has gained a gaming machine, and there are now TV screens in the main bar. These were showing cricket and tennis when we visited, but no-one was actually watching them. There is a good sized car park at the rear, which also housed some tables and chairs. The staff seemed rather inept – the Butcombe Original had run out as we arrived, but neither the barmaid nor the barman knew how to change a barrel. That left Old Speckled Hen as the only draft choice, and there were 2 more dry pumps, so not a great ale experience. The barmaid said she couldn’t serve us as she was “waiting for some ladies”, which, it transpired, meant a group of octogenarians who couldn’t work out their food bill. The barman just pottered around avoiding eye contact. When we did eventually get served we had to remind the staff of what a full pint meant. The keg range consisted of Guinness, Thatcher’s Gold, Old Mout, Moretti, Neck Oil, Amstel, Laine Mango, Madri, Cruzcampo and Inch’s Cider. Human food was standard pub grub at a fair price, and they offered dog food in packets at a less-than-fair rate. I’m not sure I’ll bother next time given that there are better pubs in the town as well as the surrounding villages.

A friendly, refurbished road pub which has retained a good local following and pub atmosphere while expanding its food trade. The bright main bar has plain wooden flooring and modern-looking stone walling. At one end is a side section with a dartboard, while the other way has a couple of more-comfortable, carpeted rooms laid up for dining. There is a small patio garden to the side. Draught ales were Tribute, Butcombe and Doom Bar and seemed well-kept (Cask Marque). Stan's cider was also on handpump. The food is proper pub fare, with a few interesting extras, rather than pretentious gastro and is very good. Recommended as a refreshment stop.
