As Mr Davies notes, The Fox is definitely in the gastro pub category with scrubbed pine tables, a large exposed stone fireplace and maroon feature walls and fittings.
The building itself is a lovely, solid, Oxfordshire stone affair tucked back from the only road which runs through Souldern. The main entrance is at the back and the car park itself is very small although there seems to be plenty of room in the village.
The small central bar faces you as you enter and I'd guess that this is the spot for vertical drinkers and those not eating. To the left is a large dining room and to the right a more informal dining and drinking area with the aforementioned fireplace.
There's also a pleasant courtyard area laid out with tables around the main entrance and a large lawned garden at the back.
The lunchtime welcome was jovial and friendly with nods and acknowledgements exchanged with each new entrant. It makes for a convivial atmosphere.
The menu was middle of the road quality pub food rather than upper end gastro but my rare roast beef baguette with soup and salad was excellent, substantial and decent value at £5.95. I'd certainly give it a whirl for something more substantial if in the area.
Three handpumps offered Wincle Wibbly Wallaby, Adnams Ghost Ship and Holdens Black Country Bitter. There's also a blackboard listing forthcoming beers which listed a fair selection without being inspirational. My Wibbly Wallaby was in good order and the GBG 2012 listing seems well earned.
A nice stop for a bite to eat or a decent pint if you're passing and I'd certainly return.

Very pleasant old pub in tiny village - only the one road in and out - in one of the remoter parts of Oxfordshire. It has been given the bare boards and scrubbed tables gastro treatment, I'm not sure why, there are no gastro pretensions, and judging by the way the bar is oddly situated in the middle of a longish room I guess it's been knocked through at some point. When we called there was a brazier burning outside to keep the smokers warm.
Friendly service and locals, and a fair selection of beers, always changing by the looks of things and it's in the GBG and runs an annual beer festival.
Well worth pulling off the nearby M40 for a break, and - there's bedrooms - a far better spot for an overnight stay than the Travelodge in the nearby services.
