A good sized pub in a prime position at the top of the High Street, it looks as though it was probably an old coaching inn and still appears to offer accomodation.

Internally it’s presumably been opened out at some point, and now has a rather bland, corporate feel to it with little in the way of any distinguishing features. Paintwork is the usual Farrow & Ball shades of grey and green, whilst the flooring was a mixture of some sort of wood strip and striped grey carpet. Seating was mostly wooden tables and chairs, with some being quite high, as well as some padded bench seating in places around the periphery. A few pictures were dotted around, including several old black and white ones of the locale. A clock made from gin bottles was perhaps a vaguely interesting feature, but overall there was really little of any note. A small TV was mounted up on the wall above a fireplace, but this was not in use on our visit.

The only beer on tap was Deuchar’s IPA, although a further pump had the clip reversed and a third appeared unused, so there may on occasions be more choice. Ciders fared no better, with Aspall’s being the only option.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Lamb

Substantial Old English Inn (a Greene King brand), with a semi-traditional interior with various seating areas. I found IPA, Old Speckled Hen and Abbot from the three handpumps. Two handpumps, offering Old Speckled Hen and IPA (£2.90). Eight years after my previous visit, little has changed and still a little bit soul-less.

The Lamb is a Greene King establishment that has been given a modern refurbishment, but still sits in the GK Old English Inns portfolio. The interior is broken up by a central stairwell that leads up to ‘37 well-appointed bedrooms’. Around the stairwell are various seating areas and the décor is more gastro pub than hotel bar. To the left is a dining area and the bar is found on the rear wall. I noted the presence of standard and premium draught products and I counted three hand pumps. One of these was unused leaving Greene King’s IPA and Old Speckled Hen as the ale options.

This pub is food led, which is given away by their website which lists several menus that cater for nippers through to the aged. Mains are priced around £9 and I thought that the burger I order was tasty, but it could have been a little bigger. My visit being on a Sunday evening, I was a little gutted that I didn’t notice that the roasts were buy one get one free after 17:00… DOH!!! I recorded that the Lamb opens for breakfast at 7am during the week and at 8am at the weekend.

Live sport is not shown here, but I did spot a plasma screen that was showing muted rolling BBC News. There was some low background music playing and live music is advertised for every Friday evening.

I found the service to be polite, but because of the lack of character and decent ale I would visit elsewhere if in the area just looking for a beer.
