It seems I had never visited this pub, always being attracted to the Lion next door, the Hole in the Wall and Thomas Rigbys instead. This is a fine pub with a glorious interior. The four hand pumps on the end of the bar were offering Black Sheep Best, Bradfield Farmer's Blonde, Hobgoblin Session IPA and Sharps Doom Bar. My half of Black Sheep was fine (NBSS 3, £4.20/pint). The bar has a glass pelmet with an image of a gryphon carrying a letter H. There are several rooms, with the walls painted a soothing blue, and the ceiling details picked out in gold paint. Worth a visit if not distracted by others in the area.

The Railway is a J-shaped pub with a long line of seating, mostly green banquettes, across the front of the pub. Across the top of the central serving counter is some notable stained glass that draws the eyes up to some impressive lights that hang from the high ceiling. There’s some more seating up the right on the way to the toilets. Standard and premium keg were available alongside four hand pumps, three of which were drawing Doom Bar, Black Sheep and Sharp’s Atlantic. Worth a punt if passing.
