Despite adverts in the pub on large chalkboards for real ale, there isn’t any. And there was no sign of food on Monday afternoon.

The original Truman’s signage survives on the exterior, and much of the internal layout also survives. The main room at the front/corner looks as if it was originally divided into two; to the left of it a small room (a snug probably) is accessed either through the gents or from a door from the street; and there’s a third room further back that wasn’t open to punters when I visited. My chum and I sat in the snug as it was the quietest. This was traditionally furnished, had a map of the world on one wall, and a framed miniature (and thus of course fake) collage of native American artifacts. I’ve never seen that before.

It’s yet another local drinkers’ pub in this real ale desert. There was nothing in here likely to draw me back, but I’m really glad that it still survives for the locals who clearly appreciate it as it was doing a very healthy trade.
