This pub has existed here since at least the early 19th century, but was rebuilt c. 1951, for reasons unknown.
The interior is really quite contemporary, having undergone a recent refurbishment. The floor is modern boarded and there’s a mix of styles from fake Victorian to hipster, with a dark wood field panelled bar front. Décor included many creepers dangling from strategic points and there was a quiz on, the easiest I’ve ever witnessed, though whilst reading the paper on my phone, I had the misfortune to absentmindedly mouth one of the answers to myself, precipitating one of the animated local customers to tell me to eff off; charming.
Ales amounted to two reversed clips for a Five Points ale and Landlord, so it was a half of Yeastie Boys Superfresh at £2.80, served by decent staff.
This could be a better pub, improved with the availability of real ale and improved behaviour of customers. The A & C need not trouble the discerning drinker however, as the wonderful Camel is a short walk from here.
