Visited 28/05/26. Visited previously 11/03/24.
Cask here was three hand pumps all dispensing Original. The Original was very ordinary. Keg offering of Guinness, Aspall, Estrella, Asahi, Pravha, Stella, Neck Oil, Moretti, Camden Hells, Hepcat.
Large Youngs establishment. Bare boarded with the bar counter against the rear wall to right of centre over to the far-right corner with the open fronted kitchen sited to its immediate left. Lots of regular and tall tables in the main floorspace to the front and immediate left and right of the bar counter. Many of the chairs were leather upholstered and in a variety of colours. The front right-hand corner had a crimson red leather banquette along the wall that side and there was an exit to the beer garden with a mix of seating types, some of which had cover. A good amount of wood panelling in the venue as you would expect for a Youngs venue. Lighting was decent and the single switched-on screen I spotted was showing Tennis absent commentary; a jaunty pop soundtrack being played at a medium volume. There is a mustard banquette over on the left-hand wall serving some regular tables and by the entrance to the carpeted Kite Room which occupies the curvy end of that side of the venue, which has a banquette fitted around the curved outer wall and serving regular tables and with a large rectangular table in the middle of the floor space. There is a curved marble drinking ledge opposite the mustard banquettes that side seating via tall, backed crimson leather stools, each seating space conveniently having its own socket to plug in laptop or mobile phone! The walls are attractively decorated so it was a major disappointment that the cask was so poor here on my visit, but I will give it the benefit of the doubt this time.

This pub dates from the mid-19th century, but I suspect the present erection may be an interwar years replacement, with quite a footprint.
The interior is a typical Young’s mauling, with somewhat zoned areas. There’s the typical David Fincher colour scheme, plenty of sea green shiny glazed tiles to columns and the bar back, mixed furniture depending on where you’re sitting (with little bottles of dried hay on tables), lots of eclectic trendy prints, unwatched multiple TV screens showing silent Lee Mack giving some sort of lecture on football, all to the accompaniment of a Brit Pop and Van Morrison soundtrack, but with nasty cooking smells wafting from the open kitchen. Customers amounted to some elderly ladies, then a boorish bunch of lads, their tables pushed up against the bar, making access difficult.
Cask amounted to just London Original and Special, so it was a half of Neck Oil, £3.80, served by an unmemorable barmaid.
Superior to the Furzedown, this isn’t a great pub by Young’s standards; if you have a yearning for their schtick, the Bull is a better bet.

This is a large pub at the top of Streatham Green, occupying a wedge of land where two roads converge. You enter via a beautiful curved wood panelled porch with the pub’s name printed on perhaps the largest doormat I’ve ever seen. Inside, you find yourself in a large, opened out room with a few notionally separate areas, but ultimately, the pub has been opened out as much as is structurally feasible. The servery is on the back wall, slightly to the right on entering, and has a traditional dark wood counter and plain mirrored bar back, with an open kitchen to the left. The whole left-hand side of the pub has been given over to dining, with the space next to the kitchen furnished with button backed banquettes and simple table and chair arrangements ideal for those wanting to eat. At the far end, double doors open into the ‘Kite Room’ - a small space in the thin end of the wedge which has similar seating in a smart carpeted space. Opposite the bar, comfier options such as armchairs, tub hairs and padded mid-height stools, combine to create a lounge-like feel, the highlight of which has to be the high backed throne-like seat built into one of the walls. The room extends to the right, into a compact space behind the ‘throne’, and doors here lead out to a decent looking garden. The pub has a mix of smart wall panels, modern glazed tiles, exposed brickwork and painted plastered walls, all decorated with arty prints, whilst each table has its own vase of flowers and large TV screens showed live football with the sound on, despite a soft rock soundtrack also playing in the background.
Three handpulls on the bar were all badged with Youngs Ordinary, which the barman gave me a taster of, as one of his regulars was complaining that it was pouring a little hazy. It tasted as reliably shite as it usually does, but with a lack of other options I ordered a full pint for £5.10. There were only a few locals in on this weekday evening visit, mostly watching the match in silence.
This is quite a nice pub that has sadly been knocked about pretty badly by Youngs, leaving only glimpses of its once, no doubt impressive interior. A lack of decent beer is also a problem, but I can’t fault the attentive service and there were still some comfy spots to settle down in. I’m glad I checked this place out, but can’t see any reason to return under its current ownership.
