This is another new SE1 entry to the Good Beer Guide. So, I thought I'd give it a try whilst in the area. Situated right next to Borough tube station, it's quite handy if you're arriving or departing here.

It looks like a nice pub from the outside but inside is fairly undistinguished. There are bare boards, walls painted dark blue or wallpapered to the rear. TVs were switched off, with Carly Simon blasting out from the speakers. I'm not sure what Pete Waterman thought about the selection, when he walked in to meet somebody.

A function room had a keycode to enter and there are a few tables on the pavement to the front, which were proving popular with some early spring sunshine.

This is a Fuller's pub. There are 4 handpulls. Pride was double clipped, ESB was on a third handpull with a 4th handpull having a clip saying "preparing". Craft beers were Beavertown Neck Oil, Siren Lumina, Mondo Little Victories, Gipsy Hill Hepcat & Brixton Reliance Pale Ale.

Bookings were being taken for the Eurovision Song Contest in May as well as the women's Six Nations rugby. Who would have thought that going to the pub to watch either would require a booking?!! There were various other promotions and events. On a Tuesday, it is 2 for 1 on cocktails. Monday is quiz night.

Service was a bit sullen. I can say that I've been now but I have no desire to return.

An ancient Borough tavern - variously the George & Dragon then George's Tavern - dating back to at least the late 17th century, but rebuilt in the brewers' Tudor in 1899, when it became the Hole in the Wall.
The previous reviews applied or apply, but as mentioned, it’s now a Fuller’s pub and a very modernised one too, as empty late Saturday evening as Moby found it, earlier on a Saturday.
Graced with framed prints, panelled walls are a predictable shade of smoky blue, with a white Anaglypta ceiling, from which is suspended a metal gantry filled with pot plants. The décor is very modern, with a pale floor, modern mainly tall - but too short - stools to modern tall tables with tealights and plants. There’s low furniture and a tangerine orange upholstered banquette to the window. Further into the pub, there’s standard height modern furniture with drum chairs, also with orange upholstery and modern shaded lamps above. The bar back has white shiny glazed tiles, the bar front is modern field panelled and again, the same shade of orange. What few customers were in, were young and probably professional incomers, talking loudly perhaps to counter the rather loud music.
Pride and Seafarers were on, as well as Dark Star Solar Eclipse (£2.55 a half and a bit bland) and Hophead at £4.95 a pint and fine, served by a friendly barmaid whose hair was the same shade of orange as the upholstery and bar front; a deliberate attempt at staff colour co-ordination?
This is by no means a great pub; the Gladstone and Libertine are right round the corner and if you fancy a Fuller’s beer, there’s always the Ship too.

This is now a Fullers pub, albeit a rather featurless modernised one. The ale choice was limited to just Pride and Hophead , there was a much larger choice of keg premium lager and craft beers. It was fairly quiet on an early Saturday evening, in fact staff outnumbered punters. My pint of hophead was in reasonable shape but not that good that I will be rushing back here.
