With its Orwell-inspired name, this opened in 1990 in a former branch of Woolworth’s, indeed one of Sir Spoonalot’s earliest ventures, situated beyond the North Circular, otherwise known as London’s asteroid belt. I wouldn’t ordinarily come to somewhere like this but needed the loo after a long trek from the tube out to the George.
The interior is small by ‘spoons standards, but then that was par for the course in the firm’s early days, with an ‘olde worlde’ look, typical of the breed. What’s more prominent than most are the extraordinary number of flashing games machines, TVs and baby changing facilities. Customers were mixed in age and a relaxed bunch at the time of my Friday 10.40pm visit.
Aside from the usual suspects, there were five guests across a good range, but just one pump was operational: Bragdy Mŵs Piws Calon Lân, £1.28 a half and in good nick, served by a friendly barman.
Aside from the electronics, this is one of the better examples.

Rated 4.5.

Standard spoons - in the Good Beer Guide 2024 under Colindale and to be fair, there didnt seem to be anything else in Colindale other than mid-rise housing promoted by a company called Unkle.

Converted woolies - with drinking area to the front and then laid out for dining towards the rear. Usual carpet style, picture style on walls and more fruit machines than in a las vegas hotel lobby.

Brains SA in very good condition.

Visit 10th October 2013

This place is said to be a conversion of a Woolworth's so I was tempted to walk in, steal some sweets and do a runner. The problem was that there were no sweets to be seen so I had to buy a pint of Bengali Tiger (£2.45). I seem to recall visiting a Spoons near here around 20 or more years ago that was also a converted Woolworths. It was the White Lion Of Mortimer in West Hendon and boasted as I recall claiming to be the biggest pub in the world, so I wonder what happened to that.

This place is one of the better shop conversions as it isn't a long narrow cave. There are windows at the back which make it light and airy. There are 10 pumps with the 2 GK beers doubled up as was the Yeovil Ruby guest ale. The other four pumps had Adnam's Sixpoint Bengali Tiger, Wadworth's Chelsea Sunset Red, Beartown Bearly Literate and Old Rosie Cider.
The quality of the Bengali Tiger was very good. The outer parts of North West London are pretty hopeless for pubs and this area is no exception, so this Spoons has very little opposition.
