The Plough on the Green looks interesting on approach with a plough on the roof to the left and covered picnic tables across the front to the right where they wrap around to the beer garden. To the right of the entrance is some raised open plan seating and also doors at the rear to the well kempt beer garden. An L-shaped serving counter sits on the rear wall just to the left of the entrance. Standard and premium keg products were available, but only two of the five hand pumps were in use, drawing Brakspear’s Gravity and Ringwood’s Forty Niner. The left-hand side of the pub is made up of snugs, I counted five, one of which in the far left is sunken with a backdrop of books making it look Potteresque. The service was polite and the handful of Tuesday afternoon locals all seemed friendly enough, but as a non-local I’ll probably not be walking out of town to revisit when next in Newbury.

A random revisit; five ales on, 4x Marstons stable in the shape of Hobgoblin, Ringwood 49er, Brakspear Bitter, a Plough-themed house beer and a guest, Thwaites Lancaster Bomber (good nick). Handily-placed for Newbury racecourse.
Sept 2014
Tucked away up a drive, this appears to be a Marstons outlet and is deceptively large inside. Rooms to left and right with a central bar on entering. Low ceilings and a bit of character from the wood fittings, though the dodgy artex should get plastered over. There’s an impressive garden to right, which has plenty of areas separated by foliage – not just a patch of grass with tables - and I really liked it. Items of note included sports TV and the prevalence of pub-grub food. Five ale pumps and we rocked-up mid beer fest, so not sure what the normal offering would look like. What we did have were beers from Brakspear, Batemans (very, very good), Clarks and Leeds. Overall, quite a pleasant surprise and I’d do this one again. Rated 7
