This Slug & Lettuce is a large L-shaped bar with a snug bar to the side of the entrance before seating from the entrance to the rear where there’s a large vaulted ceiling open plan space that backs onto the River Kennet. I was the only customer early on a recent Tuesday evening and I think the barmaid was wondering why a lone 50 year old man had decided to walk in for a beer in a place with blaring modern dance music. She was polite, but I decided to knock back the expensive half of premium lager and make my escape.

So ended up revisiting as Desmond managed to home in on this after parking the motor whilst I was at the other end of town. Things have looked up actually – the six pumps actually had some interesting beers on from Two Cocks, West Berks, St Austell and White Horse. There was also a GK standard (Abbott) and a house beer, Stonegate Crawler (middling condition if not a particularly brilliant beer). Football was on but the place was quite quiet. It also seemed to have had a bit of a clean. An improvement!

A pretty battered place with the entry lobby looking like something out of the Wild West, with lumps of plaster missing and scuffed paint work. The inside appears to be a warehouse conversion (high roof and exposed beams) and a small number of seats overlook the canal as does an unkempt smoking patio. Pool and table football to the rear, plus a multitude of big screens throughout. Over-loud modern chart music for a Saturday afternoon (the 'Newbury jukebox', as I would come to christen it during the day upon encountering it numerous times) and a preponderance of tattoos. Three ales (GK IPA, Pride and Bombardier – no evidence of the West Berks mentioned elsewhere) with the prices displayed on the pumps. The Bombardier seemed a little odd and a bit over-carbonated. I left to a cloud of smoky cooking oil enveloping the interior, probably never to return. Rated 4
