The King Harry has been on my to do list for St Albans for some time. However, situated the opposite end of the city from St Albans City station and also the wrong way (uphill) from the city's best pubs when arriving at St Albans Abbey station, I've never quite managed to get here.
It's much more nicely appointed inside than I had expected. There is a small bar area to the front with a fireplace dominating the centre of it and taking much of the space. Up a couple of steps, there are 2 further rooms which seem to be primarily used for dining. At the side, there is an outdoor patio with fairylights and a car park where vehicles have to be registered at the bar.
At the bar, there were 3 handpulls. At first sight, I could only see Fuller's London Pride & Weston's Medium Dry Vintage, but an Adnams Ghost Ship clip was hidden behind a charity box. Service was friendly and I was happy to at least find a cider. Craft beers were also represented with Beavertown Neck Oil, Deya Steady Rolling Man, Full Circle Hippy Jungle, Siren Mesmerist & Brooklyn Stonewall IPA.
Bar snacks and cocktails were advertised, as well as a steak night every Thursday.
I was expecting a characterless chain pub here, but was pleasantly surprised. Service was friendly and the cider, albeit 8.2%, was nice. Is it worth the schlep uphill from the station? Probably not when St Albans has so many other inviting establishment, but I'm glad I've finally visited.

Under the clutches of M&B, this old pub is located next to a busy mini-roundabout and opposite a tree-shaded church. Some old touches such as low beams in the bar area, a bare wood floor and brick fireplace, this rises from the sunken bar area, served by a snorkel-shaped bar up to a thin dining area. Ales were a bit of a let-down with St Austell Proper Job (x2), TT Landlord (x2) and Sharp's Doom Bar, but a bottle of Thornbridge Wye (cucumber pale ale) was a bit of a saviour, albeit at an alum-mouthed £4.75. I learned this was a vestige from a recent Thornbridge tap takeover, so it's clear the ale range isn't always this anodyne.
