A friendly pub, though slightly more expensive than necessary, well described by Komakino, below, and there is now a gravelled terrace at the front with various tables and chairs; this seemed to be occupied by families and dogs, and there is a large TV screen in the corner showing stills from yachting events. There is a back entrance at the bottom of the hill, convenient if you want to visit one of the yacht clubs afterwards. Inside, a foreign family had made life less pleasant by allowing their brood to run around shrieking and stamping on the resonant floorboards. Ales on were Otter Bitter, Purity Mad Goose, Doombar and London Pride. The Otter was in good condition, but the noise from the unruly foreigners put us off staying to eat or try more beer. I’ll probably come back here next time I’m in as this seems to be the better of Hamble’s pubs.

A hop, skip and a jump down from the Victory, the King & Queen is set back from the road and accessed via a shaded, gravelled beer garden-cum-patio on a slope. It's a narrow staple-shaped affair with the bar immediately in front of you on entry with a dining area located down a few steps to the bar's right. Chalkboards above the bar acclaim this is the "world's best yachting pub" (2014) as well the best rum pub (they have over 30 bottles). Ales on were Otter Bitter, Ringwood Razorback (£1.95 and spot on), Doom Bar and London Pride. Flooring is more laminate than bare-wooded, most of the décor screams upcycle and the clientele is a little plummier than those slightly up the gradient at the Victory and Whyte Hart.
