Blue Scrumpy left this review about The Bell Inn

The Bell was the busiest of all the pubs we visited in Gloucestershire on Saturday. It was also the pub with the best cask ale selection. However, the interior is nothing to write home about.

There are a couple of different sections inside, but many had spilled outdoors to a courtyard at the rear. Inside there are pictures of local Cotswold landmarks on the walls.

There were plenty of staff on hand behind the bar. Although, there was still a short wait to be served. Luckily, bar staff were serving people in order. The 3 regular cask ales here are Prescott Hill Climb, Purity Ubu & Timothy Taylor Landlord. Guest beers were Shakespeare The Bard's Best & North Cotswold Tumbling Jack. I chose the Tumbling Jack, which was in good condition and was my favourite beer of the day. I missed the CAMRA discount too! Maybe the sign advertising it is now fully hidden behind a floral display, as per the previous review!

For beer choice and quality, this was easily the best pub of the day in Gloucestershire. However for atmosphere, it is lacking. Still clearly a very popular pub though and worthy of a visit.

The Bell was a relative haven of peace during the Euro 2024 final, which suited me fine; this was probably because of the dire quality of the pictures on the pub's two TV sets, rather than disinterest, as in my case. There were five beers available - my half of Prescott Hill Climb was neither better nor worse than the last time I had it about 10 years ago, but it was in reasonable condition if a little cold and a little green (NBSS 2.5). The words Camra Discount were partly hidden behind a floral display, but I never look for one these days - I hope the incoming government continues to treat pensioners well.

OK let's not beat about the bush, the interior is a dire blandised mess with snot colour woodchip wallpaper and a crappy Middle Earth decal. However it's GBG listed and it absolutely justified it's inclusion; four cask on; TTL, Prescott Hill Climb and 2x North Cotswold. A half of the NC’s Porter was in brilliant shape (NBSS 4.5) and slipped down a treat, with a bit of friendly chat from the bar and a buzzing atmosphere. So for that alone you should alight the train to give it a go.

Closed this week but signs of renovation underway inside - so hopefully will be open again soon.
