Seven years on from Blackthorn’s inaugural review and not a lot, if anything has changed at this pub/hotel. It is still indeed a substantial black and white timber work building that dominates as you enter Dedham from the north.
First impressions are still a little disappointing as you first enter the room that houses the bar counter, as it is quite small and doesn’t have a lot going for it, being quite plain and noisy, if my visit was anything to go by, as it seemed to be the space in the pub where most of the locals congregate for vertical drinking and catching up.
However, go beyond here and you find three additional sizeable rooms, one after each other with a lot more character with lots of exposed period beams, substantial brick fireplaces and comfortable settee seating in the middle room. This seemed set up more as the hotel bar lounge area, whereas the two rooms either side were more set up for dining. So a friendly bar area for the locals to enjoy vertical drinking and much more relaxing period lounge and dining sections for hotel guests and locals alike.
Outside there is still a concrete street side patio area in front of the bar entrance and then a grassed elevated garden to the other side of the car park entrance. A barrier was across the entrance to the car park proclaiming that it was for hotel guests only, which is fair if you are paying to stay here. The large public car park is only a short stroll further out of town for everyone else.
The bar top supports three hand pumps which had the same Adnams Southwold and Ghost Ship alongside Woodforde Wherry as seven years ago so I would hazard a guess that these are permanent beers.

A substantial street corner pub in the middle of this very pleasant village, it’s an attractive building with much black and white timberwork on the outside and a number of different rooms within, as well as a small patio area off to the side. A small cart was selling ice creams here on our visit which was a good idea in the current hot weather.
First impressions were perhaps a little disappointing, with the room that houses the bar counter being somewhat more contemporary than might have been expected from looking at the outside of the building. Although there was some of the old timberwork in evidence, the room had been freshly plastered and painted in a khaki green colour, with some cream wood panelling on the lower part of the walls and stripy carpet on the floor. Persevere though and it gets better as you go on in to the depths of the building, with the central room in particular being somewhat more attractive looking with a large brick fireplace and a cast iron chimney hood, a large cauldron full of logs, plenty of beams on the ceiling, pale yellow paintwork and a sofa or two either side of a wooden table that was made to look like two books stacked on top of each other. Other rooms either side included pale blue paintwork and wallpaper covered in postage stamps. By the time I left, despite my initial reservations, I had formed the opinion that they had actually done a pretty good job in renovating an old building and combining the contemporary and traditional.
Beers on tap were Southwold and Ghost Ship from Adnams, along with Woodforde Wherry, whilst the solitary cider was Aspall’s Suffolk.
