The Portsmouth Hoy, Poole

Another nice looking pub along the quayside, unfortunately another Hall and Woodhouse pub with predictable beer, Tanglefoot, Badger Best and Fursty Ferret, the latter being of average quality. Beer choice aside its a decent pub.

This historic quayside pub is currently owned by Hall and Woodhouse. Despite its location it has managed to avoid becoming too commercialised. As described below, the predominant theme is wood in a vain attempt to make it feel like the inside of a boat. Wooden ceiling, walls, floor and, with the exception of the brick fireplace, wooden décor. There are several nautical themed pictures plus other bric-a-brac around. Reasonable food and an industrial coffee machine make it a comfortable place to spend time, although the beer quality lets it down a bit – three ales on, I had the First Call which wasn't on peak form. I would be happy to include in a crawl or hide away here for an afternoon.

A decent and traditional quayside pub with some outdoor seating taking in the views and sunshine. A long boarded room with the bar along one side, this winds around and rises up a ramp to another rear section. Wood panelling, some exposed brickwork, wood boarded ceilings, seating is generally regular issue apart from a pair of large barrel tables. Some areas are semi divided booth style. Décor has ship's lamps and the usual old B&W photos, Hall and Woodhouse beers, First Call, Hopeful Hop and Tanglefoot repeated across the two pairs of three handpumps. I'm not massively keen on H&W beers but I liked the pub and ambience and ate a decent enough steak here for dinner. Friendly and efficient service.

One of several pubs on The Quay that make the most of the pleasant views and provide some outside seating, this is perhaps somewhat more of a traditional pub than some of it’s compatriots and is a pleasant enough place to stop for a pint. It’s a single room bar with dark wood flooring, a few oak beams on parts of the ceiling and wood cladding elsewhere. A couple of old beer barrels had been pressed in to use as tables for you to rest your pint on and there were various nautically themed pictures on the wall such as boats and fish. Some wood and glass partitions on the right separated the area in to booths with leatherette bench seating around a table. A small raised area at the rear had wood panelling on the walls. The menu looked to concentrate mainly on fish dishes, and price wise these appeared to be a step up from your usual pub grub with most of the main courses somewhere in the £12 - £15 range. We didn’t eat though, so can’t comment on the quality. Staff seemed quite switched on and were often seen wiping down tables when they were vacated. Beers on tap were all from the Hall & Woodhouse stable with their Tanglefoot, Badger and Hopping Hare. The solitary cider was Stowford Press.
