Borough Beer House, Farnham

A distinctive and attractive façade. Inside is a tidy place over two levels with a lot of thought put into it. Downstairs is a fairly small and straightforward drinking area with a large hearth fireplace and huge chunky beams as period features. The upper loft room is very tidy with old tapestry prints, pews and vaulted roof giving an aged, ecclesiastical feel which is somewhat spoilt by the large blue fabric wall-mounted squares which I assume must be for sound baffling purposes. Good Beer Guide listed with six cask available which seemed a stretch on a Sunday afternoon and indeed so, with neither of mine (Roosters and Big Hand) being GBG quality - NBSS 1.5 and 2.5. Far better bets on the keg and in the fridge which is where most of the customers were swerving to and as a result there was very little cask turnover, which was a shame – I gave up and switched to a bottle of Flensburger. Odd one, it's clearly an attractive drinking den with plenty of positives but the GBG listing seems a bit suspect to me, more about range than quality based on this visit. I will endeavour to give it another go given the praise from elsewhere.
