The Banshee, Stockport

This unit with Castle Chambers written above the door has had a busy few years as a vegan restaurant called the Allotment and then a Viking bar called Vinabod before being taken over by the owner of the Cracked Actor up the road and being renamed The Sandman. That didn’t last very long because about a year later it became the Glass Spider, and on my visit to Stockport on a recent midweek evening it was all change again, the latest incarnation being an Irish themed bar called the Banshee. The bare boarded bar area with maroon painted walls and some Guinness and Caffrey’s advertising merch is open plan with a mix of standard and high furniture in the front and a double sided serving counter about three quarters of the way up that separates the seating from a dartboard across the rear. In the front left corner is a tiny stage for the advertised regular live music, expect fiddlers and such things. Fairy light are found in the front windows that are part screened by stained glass topped partitions. There’s a television for live horse racing, which was muted for some Irish background music. Up the right is a raised red carpeted seating area that is separate from the bar. Premium keg was available so I decided to have a pint of Guinness that was served by the friendly woman behind the counter, and cost less than a fiver. This is the most raucous bar I’ve visited in Stockport, and one of the few in the centre of town that actually sticks to its advertised opening times during the week.
