Wygston's House, Leicester

Aged building made into a well-converted public house in 2017. Not necessarily obvious to the first time visitor, with the Jubilee Square entrance hidden behind mature trees. Pop beyond these and you enter a courtyard with a timber-framed building of great age awaiting, with a Georgian extension beyond. The main Medieval bar is an impressive place to sit, with the tall thin glazed panes giving an unusual effect. Further back are a couple of the Georgian rooms with character. Look out for the full suits of armour and amazing Art Deco style parrot lamps. On sunny days, there’s a sizeable beer garden out front which is popular with the De Montfort students. Ales usually from regionals with breweries like Listers, Wantsum and Woodfordes. After an initially impressive first couple of visits in the winter months, summer has seen the ale quality take a nosedive – NBSS 3.5, 3.5, 2, 2 and 2 – so someone needs to get a grip on the cellar and line cooling as this should be a GBG shoo-in. For now, it is worth taking in for the quirky novelty factor. And for a view of the pretty girls (or boys, if that’s your bag) on a fine sunny afternoon out front. 6.5

Set in an old medieval building that has been added to in the Georgian era and contains several rooms of varying interest. Four cask beers were available on my January visit listed below, I went with the Wantsum Moutere which was maybe an acquired taste but I did warm to it after a while. As a building there is interest but as a pub It didn't quite do it for me.
