The Brewers Tap, Southsea

A small frontage hides a fair amount of space for the Southsea Brewery Tap, with an upstairs room accessed via a steep narrow staircase providing additional space to the main room which has a sofa, some stools alongside the wall and a few more at the bar. This is predominantly a keg outlet and it looks like the host brewery restricts itself to craft keg - there are several Southsea brews available, whereas both cask lines are guests. Craft kegs from the likes of Verdant also feature. Far from traditional, but actually a pretty relaxing place to hang out, with reasonable prices and an interesting music backdrop. I liked it and might consider the fair old hike out on another visit to the area.

As described by Moby, below, this is one of the better pubs in this area. There was a friendly crowd in, the pub whippet was fairly welcoming and the atmosphere on a mid-week visit was convivial. The bar counter, made from wriggly tin and scaffold poles, reminded us of bars in the Former Yugoslavia, though without the bullet holes. Ten craft ales on (three from the parent brewery), plus three cask – Thorn Ridge from Freeman Street, Good Chemistry’s Cocoa Mild and Fauna Brewing Meadow Maker. It was a good end to a mixed day’s crawl, and I’d be very happy to come back.
