The Fishermans Arms, Plymouth

Sorry but this pub has been through a VERY unfitting refurbishment. The old Fishermans had a real pub feel about it, it now resembles a gastro/wine bar/hospital waiting room. The new landlord/lady obviously wanted a place where locals were not welcome, they want to be more recognise as a restaurant than a pub. It seems totally out of place and lost in this back street. Talking to one "local" they told me there is a bit of snobbishness about the place. We had the fish & chips, when it came we thought it was a starter! A piece of battered fish not much bigger than a fish finger, six chips stacked jenga style & finally mushy peas that had been put on the plate by what looked like a paint brush!! If you are after arty out priced food then this is the place for you, if you want a pub with a good atmosphere we suggest you try the many more welcoming hostelries on the Barbican! Not one of the best by far!!

A St. Austell house, this pub has had quite a sympathetic refurb, combining some old features with a modern fresh feel. Today it had on Tribute and Proper Job with Dartmoor Best as guest (a very good pint at £3.25). There was a fourth hand pump unused, and it had Healey's Cornish Rattler cider on tap. It felt well balanced and well run, and thoroughly deserving of its Cask Marque.

Excellent real ales, HSD a real gem, not surprised just been awarded cask marque. Menu a pleasant surprise as well,do not expect food of this quality in a pub ! Had Pheasant with whisky sauce, absolutely delicious, wife had duck with peaches, again, lovely, and all wines by the glass. Lovely place, recommend it highly. ( also, very friendly locals )
