Brecon Tap, Brecon

Nice friendly modern bar, nicely refurbed with hidden back room. Good beer and service

The Brecon Tap is set in a former cafe and although it doesn't bill itself as a micropub has all the qualities of one especially compared to many of the ones found in the Teesside area. The main exception is that they do a simple hot food option mainly pie based. Inside it's a long narrow split level room with shelving containing bottles of beer from Brecon and other breweries on the left and the bar on the left at the front of the higher level. There is a wooden floor and mostly low tables and chairs. Past the bar is further seating and a small dog leg at the back which has a fire escape to the next street. Also at the rear are two sets of toilets. I looked for a television but couldn't find one and there was no music or fruit machines. There were only a few in on my early Wednesday evening visit all sitting on stools at the bar. The small bar has six hand pumps and a small selection of spirits but no optics. I assume there must also have been some wines and soft drinks. There is a set of keg taps at the back where I couldn't see what was on. The six hand pumps had one unused, Brecon Copper Beacons, Red Beacons & Lovely Tackle, Alechemy Five Sisters and Arran Dark. I tried the Copper Beacons (£3.30), Red Beacons (£3.30) and Five sisters (£3.50) all of which were in excellent condition. I liked this place and would definitely return.
