Yurt Lush, Bristol

Although this pub has been around for a few years, as it was a “pop-up” rather than a permanent structure, it has not been added to the site previously. It was located adjacent to The Knight’s Templar, but has now relocated to Clock Tower Yard near the approach to Temple Meads station as they are now building a hotel where it was previously. The friendly barmaid informed me that they have been in their current spot since February, and will be there for at least another year, hopefully longer. As she also pointed out, if they are required to relinquish the land they are currently on, they can just take it down and relocate elsewhere! As it’s name suggests, this is a yurt, or tent of sorts, and comprises a larger central area with two smaller rooms off to each side. Being a tent, much of the internal structure is wood with boards on the floor and carved support poles forming the roof structure. A wood burning stove was in the centre of the larger room, although it was a shame that this wasn’t lit now that there is a distinct autumnal chill in the air. Recessed LED lights were in the roof, whilst some Kilner jars had been pressed in to use as lamp shades and were hung above the bar which makes a change from the ubiquitous exposed filament bulbs. A few books and a watering can were on a shelf. The food offering seems to be primarily about brunch and lunch with a couple of chalkboards highlighting what was available. Evening food is restricted to Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays when they have steak, curry and burger nights respectively. Thus the choice on my Thursday evening visit was limited to three curries. I opted for the Beef Rendang, and whilst not particular cheap at £12.95, it was nonetheless a decent and tasty dish served with the best lime pickle I’ve ever had and a very good onion bhaji. Unfortunately there were no real ales on tap, just Butcombe’s Brunel IPA which seems appropriate given the location. The solitary cider was Ashton Press, although there was also a second pump for Cornish Orchards. Whether this was just off, or being taken out, I’m not sure as they seemed to have gone to a lot of trouble to cover it up. All in all, a quirky and unusual venue, and well worth popping in if you’re near the station.
