The Man in the Moon (JD Wetherspoon), Newport

This has only been open a short while (Spring 2014) and I must admit I thought they had stopped using pub names with "Moon" in. Maybe they should name one after the legendary drummer of the Who. This is housed in an old church but was apparently a night club when they took it on. There are various areas including upstairs and the bar area at the rear. It was pretty packed on my Saturday afternoon visit. The standard guest ale price here is £2.49 but the food clubs are dearer with the Steak Club weighing in at £8.99. The bar has two sets of six hand pumps which had two Available Soon, one unused, Abbot, Broadside, Goddard's Ducks Folly and Doom Bore doubled up and Island Nipper Bitter. I went for the Ducks Folly (£2.49) which was in good nick. Despite the beer choice not being great I thought this was a decent enough Spoons in an unusual building.

Fine converted chapel, albeit with a large fireplace on the raised area where you would once have found the alter, with a three-sided balcony overlooking the main seating / dining area. Also has a new side extension housing the bar area and some further tables, on front of which can be found the patio area. The furniture is more modern than you might expect, whereas the decor is relatively restricted. Only eight different real ales from the two banks of six handpumps, but these included Goddard's Inspiration and two from the Island Brewery: Nipper Bitter and Earls RDA (£2.35).
