The Volunteer, Honiton

An unspoilt traditional high street boozer, once a coaching inn, as described below. There was a friendly bunch of locals in and the atmosphere was pleasant. Two ales on, Bath Gem and Tribute, both drinkable, neither brilliant. A good bolt hole and place to grab a few swift ones, worth including on a crawl.

Very traditional Devon town pub with a thatched roof, also retaining most of its original layout of mostly small rooms. Pool table at the back, with a skittle alley and old-school outside toilets down 'nicotine alley' beyond. Basic furniture and limited decor throughout. Regular live music advertised. Two real ales on handpump: Bombardier and Courage Best (£1.50, half).
