The Watch Maker (JD Wetherspoon), Prescot

Town centre branch of Wetherspoon's where I decided to call in for a late Saturday morning breakfast. The layout is similar to so many of the chain's pubs with open-plan seating areas. The usual ales were on - Greene King Abbot, Ruddles Best & Sharp's Doom Bar. 3 guests were Coach House Postlethwaite's & Peerless Langton Spin & Full Whack. Ciders were Weston's Old Rosie & Gwynt y Ddraig Black Dragon. Clientele were the usual mix of old men, a few shoppers and families. Quite a few others were eating. Some were just drinking.

This Spoons is set in a former supermarket and has possibly the most hideous external look I've seen of any JDW outlet. It makes up for it with the attractive timepiece themed interior. The roughly square room is partly split by some partitioning. Sadly the beer choice was pretty dismal across the ten hand pumps with three available soon, the JDW Trio Of Doom with Abbot & Doom Bore doubled and Exmoor Gold just leaving Big Bog Will O' The Wisp (£2.25) as the only viable option. At least it was in decent nick. This one was totally let down by the rubbish choice of beers.

Modern 'spoons with quite an attractive interior, with generally light furniture and decor enhanced by various horological features and local history displays. Also has some patio seating out on the pavement. Reasonable selection from the ten handpumps, including the Wolf Brewery Spring Ale (£2.25).

Totally uninspiring Wethers. Quite dark and depressingly brown. However, a lot of the other pubs in Prescot are much worse so compared to them lot its ok I suppose.

The Watch Maker is a standard Wetherspoons with all the usual fixtures and fittings and the normal cask beers.The only feature worth mentioning is the moderate collection of clocks on the walls
