Wm. Hawkes, Hull

Can't really add to Steve's description below and find myself in total agreement with his thoughts including the long rabbit.The way this "faux" pub is put together reminds me very much of the Jerusalem Tavern in London,a favourite of mine and as such I like this one very much as well.

Sister pub to the Lion & Key,it has quite a small interior but lots of charm.The bar room is followed by a back lounge with dark panelling and the trade mark wagon wheel hangs from the ceiling.Decoration features a vast array of horse brasses and old beer bottles and it's firmly pitched as an ale house.The 9 handpumps were drawing Sperrin Head Hunter,Yates Undercliff,Canon Fire and Holy Joe ,Wentworth Blueberry Stout,Black Country Fireside,Cathead Mild and IPA (sadly out of condition,or just a poor brew ? ) I preferred the Lion & Key but this place is fine if crawling the area but maybe consider carefully before ordering one of the "house" Cathead ales.

Another ale house style pub, sadly only handled mugs available for that "Get Carter" moment, the beers OK. The front bar has stripped brick while the back room is traditionally furnished with settles and Britannia tables. There are lots of old photos, a mass of horse brasses and other brassware. It's a neat recreation of an old style pub.

If you intend to visit Wm. Hawkes, you first have to know where it is, and you'll have to look out for it - there's no blackboard outside promoting Sky Sports (no TV), nor windows advertising chilled lagers (none of those either); just a simple shop front, with the name discreetly picked out in gold above the door. Inside, it's pretty dark, with illumination mainly by candle (if you've come out dressed to the nines, you may want to be aware that there is a fair amount of dried candle wax on the seating). Two small-ish rooms, with the bar on the right in the first of them. On that bar are 9 pumps and a tap for Stowford. The choice is not dissimilar to the other 2 pubs in the group (Lion & Key and Walters). Price was the same (£3.10), as was the excellent service from the friendly bar-maid, along with the lack of custom. A shame about the latter: I daresay it picks up later on - it certainly should as this is another must-visit on a Hull Old Town pub crawl. In fact, given the history of the building and the high quality of the interior decoration, I'd say that any tourist really should pop in.
