The Wagon & Horses (JD Wetherspoon), Sheffield

The Waggon & Horses is an original pub but dating from 2013 as a Spoons. It's a roughly square room with what looks like a new conservatory area at the rear with a paved patio behind. As tends to be the case with newer Spoons the fixtures and fittings are a bit better than average. It was fairly quiet on a Thursday afternoon. Thankfully it's not a Lloyds No 1 so the lighting rig and idiot booth are long gone. The bar has ten hand pumps but the choice could have been better consisting of the JDW Trio Of Doom with Abbot & Doom Bore doubled, Ossett Snake Mocha & Big Red, Saltaire Cascade Pale, Sheffield Crucible Best and a cider. I went for the Snake Mocha and also the Vindaloo from the Curry Club both of which were fine. I thought this was a decent Spoons.

Nice-looking pub in a prominent position on the Market Place, decently refurbished and extended by Wetherspoons. Very pleasant light interior with a mix of modern furniture in the various seating / dining areas. Small but attractive rear patio garden. Offers a few extra features such as a very welcome real fire on a cold winter's day and weekly mother and toddler morning. Reasonable range of real ales from the two banks of five handpumps, and my pint of Snake Mocha stout from Ossett (£2.65, as in the premium bracket) was in excellent shape. Worth a stop if in the area.

The Waggon is a large looking pub that is in the middle of Chapeltown next to a busy road junction. The best thing about this pub is the outside has once inside things go downhill very quickly,there is one very large room that is L shaped,there were two raised areas one to the left near the entrance and one to the front right these had tall tables and chairs,the main room had very few seats with the rear being completly devoid of any seats,this is probably because there was a DJ rig and people probably dance in this area. There were no real ales on the bar and the keg option was Tetley smooth crap which it was. To make matters worse there were kids running around like they do in a playground. This is the first pub you see if arriving in Chapletown from Sheffield on bus or train it is probably best avoided,i only did the pub because i like doing new pubs. Pub visited 21/7/2012
