The Mortal Man, Windermere

Originally called the White House, this was an ale house built in 1689 and the much larger 19th century hotel either grew up around it or gradually replaced it. The publike part is now to the right hand side of the main building, with smaller rooms off the low ceilinged bar, and with its beams and small windows perhaps indicating its age; there is access to the hotel dining room to the left on entering. There were five hand pumps on the bar at the time of my visit, with four cask beers on; five ciders were listed on an adjacent blackboard. I went for Cross Bay Halo EPA 3.6%, which at the time I assessed as NBSS 3.0, but having since drunk this beer in much better condition elsewhere I'm inclined to think it was probably just 2.5 here; I also had a half of the house beer, White House 1869 (NBSS 3.5), which I assume is brewed by Marstons, as their glasses are used here. Worth a visit for its historical interest, its location and (in reasonable weather) the garden and the view. Date of visit: 6th February 2023
