Rose & Crown, Chesterfield

This is a fairly substantial roadhouse pub in a none-too-appealing area and a fair trek from Chesterfield proper; it’s a Project William pub courtesy of Everards, linked though not exclusively to the Brampton brewery. As described below, the interior is large and slightly trendified, with either a carpeted or modern boarded floor; there’s a trendy patterned bar front, décor in the form of random black and white photos. There are 10 pumps, my Ashover Three Horseshoes was £2.03 a half though rather dull; I couldn’t finish it. This place may find favour with fans of Brampton beers which may justify the trek, but I didn’t warm to this place.

A quite splendid pub, quite large with a collection of connected areas in the main part and a snug behind the bar, with (I think) 11 cask ales on, Brampton brews heavily featured of course. As other have commented, the sort of pub you could happily spend considerable time in.

A solid looking inter war years pub carrying Brampton Ales exterior signage and is a Project William pub.There are lots of external benches while the interior has retained a lot of original features.To the right of the main entrance is a seperate small snug with a few armchairs and a serving hatch if you want solitude.Turn left for the tap room section with the vast array of handpumps and some high tables in the window with a wall mounted old map of the area showing the industry which used to dominate .Beyond the bar there is a large ,open area with a further section in the far corner of the building. The serving team were friendly and very knowledgeable about all things ale related and the ale range on my trip was Brampton Stout,Best and Golden Bud ,Everards Tiger,Ashover Three Horseshoes,Kelham Island Easy Rider,Acorn Gorlovka Imperial Stout (NBSS 4.5),Ossett World Hop Series France (NBSS 3.5),Three Acre Harvest Gold and Tapped Brew El Camino.That's a terrific line up in a great pub and besides being a must visit,I really will spend a lot longer in here on my next visit.
