The Goose, Wolverhampton

A terraced Samual Cooper freehouse, set under a mock-Tudor stone building and the town centre bus stops that mean, along with the smokers at the door, it can be a fight to get in, or more generally, to get out. The frontage is mainly glass, with some red and white paintwork. The interior is effectively an open plan room divided up by rows of columns supporting the roof. The serving bar is to the left on entry and was decorated with the 6 nations flags. The decor comprised of the usual red, cream, patterned wallpaper and wood panel, with a cream ceiling and a patterned carpet. There is an area with a pool table, bar footy game and some video gamey thing and the place was adorned with loads of silent TVs. The background music was soft. A number of photos of old Wolverhampton appear on the walls. I didn't eat, so can't comment on the food, but i had a good idea of the menu, as many dishes were to be found in the carpet. The service was fine, the clientele a general Spoonsy kind. Beer; usual tap stuff, with Marston's EPA, Pedigree, Banks's Bitter and Hobgoblin on handpull - the Hobgoblin was OK. A general town centre cheapy place.

Single-bar pub of a reasonable size, but with a curious layout enforced by the sub-division into a number parallel seating areas (some up a couple of steps) separated by the remnants of former walls before the place was partially opened out. Pool table. Menus with plenty of cheap food offers. Three handpumps offering Rev James, Old Speckled Hen and EPA (at a very competitive £1.69). Overall, much like one of the less distinguished Wetherspoons.

Formerly The Goose in the City, now re-named The Lady Wulfrun and re-branded as a (M&B) Samuel Cooper Freehouse, in direct competition with JD Wetherspoon's.
