New Inn, Richmond

This is a pleasant locals pub with a desirable location overlooking Ham Common. The pub has an approximate L-shape layout with plain carpet, dated wallpaper, a lincrusta ceiling lined with dark wood beams, and a large L-shaped servery opposite the front door, which runs back down the right-hand side of the room. To the left on entry is a small seating area with a few tables and chairs around an attractive brick fireplace, which was happily lit on a bitterly cold November evening. A few more tables and chairs appear along the front wall, opposite the bar, under some draughty sash windows, with a small partitioning screen part way along. The room then runs to the rear down the right-hand side, past a smaller fireplace with an attractive mantle and tiled surround with floral design. More tables and chairs run all the way to the rear, with another modest partitioning screen and a large blackboard listing the specials. The bar has an atrractive, long curved counter with dark wood panels, a matching gantry with smart light fixtures and a more modern looking bar back with some arched mirrors. Behind the bar is a space that appears to act as more of a restaurant, which I didn't explore, and possibly a beer garden. Soul tunes were playing in the background and there was a nice, atmospheric buzz from the few locals in on a midweek evening. Not much too set the pulse racing on the bar, with Youngs Ordinary, Fullers London Pride clipped twice and Taylors Landlord at £6.00 a pint comprising the cask options for the day. Two pumps remained unused but the Landlord was pretty good for a beer that I feel never tastes quite as good down South. The barmaid was very welcoming to a new face and the geezers propping up the bar all greeted me too. This is a bit of a dead zone for the average pub crawler, stuck in an affluent but hard to reach spot between Richmond Park and the Thames, but if you're going to plonk a pub here and expect people to frequent it, you can do a lot worse than this. A very civilised sort of place, with a drawing room atmosphere - tasteful furnishings, open fire, flowers on tables, even a standard lamp. It has a fair food trade but still manages some pub activity with quizzes and major sport. Ales on were TT Landlord, London Pride and Youngs Original. Very pleasant on a sunny afternoon.

Food-focused pub on the north eastern corner of Ham Common, with bus stops for the number 65 outside. On my late Monday lunchtime visit, I think I was the only drinker in the pub. There were a number of different groups all finishing up their meals. Bar staff were cheerful and the interior is comfortable. Regular cask ales are Fuller's London Pride & Young's London Original. The guest beer was Timothy Taylor Landlord. My Young's was ok, but I'm not a particular fan of the beer. In fact, with a fairly mainstream line-up, I'm surprised this place makes the 2024 Good Beer Guide cut.

A traditional pub, one room with a central bar, carpeted and wallpapered walls, plenty of seating with food in mind. Six hand pumps with a fairly basic selection of four on,Robinsons Trooper, London Pride, Adnams Broadside and Youngs bitter, the Youngs beer was served in very good condition and was the best I've tasted it in a long while. A nice enough pub for a passing pint but no more than that.

The New inn on Ham common is very much a traditional pub. No music or television blasting out here so one can eat and drink in peace. 4 real ales are served here although the prices of drinks are a shade higher than the local competition. There is a daily specials board and a printed menu. The food is a high quality with good portions but again the cost of the meals are in our opinion about 20% overpriced.The staff are first rate and despite the higher costs we thoroughly enjoy visiting this pub.For more comfort eat in the conservatory area It does tend to be very dog friendly so if you hate Dogs then this might be negative for you. thankfully never many kids in here. Recommended.

This is quite a large pub situated on the edge of Ham Common. The original building on the site was known as The White Hart, with the name changing to The New Inn when the current pub was built in 1756 although it did have a spell as The Hobart Arms named after a local dignitary. Nowadays the pub is one large area with a central bar, the room winding on beyond the bar to the right, ultimately leading to the rear garden. Carpeted and the walls decorated with hunting scenes, copper artifacts and the usual B&W local scenes, the pub has a comfortable homely feel. A TV in one corner was showing some routine documentary. Food is expensive going by the specials board and the paper menu sheets laid out on the tables. Five handpumps dispensing a frankly mundane selection of four, London Pride, Youngs Ordinary x2, Adnams Broadside and Courage Directors. The Pride and Directors were branded as guest beers which to me shows a distinct lack of imagination. The pub itself is clean and tidy, comfortable and probably a nice spot for a bit of lunch but the ale selection won't have me rushing back.
