Duke & Rye, Chichester

I nearly missed this pub as it's in an old church opposite the cathedral, and the advertising outside gives more of an impression that it's a coffee shop rather than a pub. Once inside however it feels like, well, a pub in a church, which is exactly what it is. There is a large bar in the middle, with seating areas around the rest of the floor, but the pub conversion has been kept quite minimalistic, and with the feel of the original architecture you can have no doubt that you are actually in a church. Took a while to get used to, but I rather liked it. I also liked the way they'd done the seating areas, which are slightly divided up so it feels a bit more intimate than one homogenous sprawl would do. There are three real ales on hand pumps. It is obviously competing on a lot of other levels with the JDW down the road, but I much prefer this place, even if I have less choice of ales and if costs £3.00 for a Hobgoblin.
