The Flying Childers Inn, Matlock

Village pub with a bar to the left and a snug to the right of the entrance. The bar is slightly larger and is on two levels. It has a tiled floor with rugs. A dartboard can be found above the fireplace on the upper level. Framed music posters line the one wall with a large set of antlers on another. Most tables in the bar were reserved for Sunday lunch. We enquired about any spare tables in the snug but were told there weren't any. Draught Bass is a regular beer here. Guests for our visit were both from Abbeydale - Deception & Vespers. The cider was Rattler and Thornbridge Green Mountain was the pick of the keg options. Dogs and children are both welcome. Events advertised included an Easter cooking competition, a St George's Day meal, an open mic night and a quiz night. I found the gents toilets a little strange. The trough has boxes of whisky on a shelf above it, along with quite a few pumpclips on the walls (I wonder if the ladies has the same). The cubicle in the gents also had some whisky boxes too. The pub also has a small car park just opposite with an outdoor seating area behind that. I quite liked it here and would say it worth a visit if you are in the Peak District.

A small, traditional village pub, formed from two adjacent buildings on a shallow corner in the centre of the village. The front door opens into what appears to be a tiny village shop, with a disused hatch that must have functioned as an off sales. A door to the right leads into the very small public bar, which has a real fire, three settles and a small bar counter with three hand pumps. The beers are repeated on another three pumps in the room to the left of the porch, which is larger and has bench seating and a small fire place; this room was apparently not part of the pub originally. Most of the fittings and furniture appear unchanged over many decades and the pub is on Camra's regional inventory of historic pub interiors. Beers available at the time of my visit were Bombardier, Spitfire and the rather more local Storm Pale Gale. I had a half of Bombardier, which was in good condition. (The 172 bus from Bakewell at 11:25 gets here just before opening time, and there is another back to Bakewell at 12:20pm, but please note that it was a couple of minutes ahead of timetable; luckily I had left the pub early just in case. A 30 minute walk to Rowsley will meet a more frequent bus service to either Bakewell or Derby.)

This pub is in a very quiet small village. There are two small rooms here we went it the room on the right and this was fairly basic and unaltered but comfortable enough there were three real ales on here we had a drink of Castle Rock Harvest Pale and this was very nice the other beers were Bombadier and a beer called Classic Bitter we did'nt know who brewed this beer. Visiting this pub is like going back in time there is an old till and sweets behind the bar there was no hot food but there was some decent looking cobs.
