Trafalgar Tavern, Greenwich, SE10

I wandered along to the Trafalgar Tavern on a recent Monday afternoon and encountered a tour group outside who were being given the low down on the battle of Trafalgar by their guide. His main aid was the statue of Admiral Lord Nelson that proudly looks over the Thames from the perimeter of the picnic tables that are adjacent to the pub entrance. On entering the pub I found an L shaped bar area with seating to the right of the entrance. Tables and chairs also line the length of the floor to ceiling windows that look onto the Isle of Dogs. Beyond the bar area is a dining area and further beyond is an area that had been reserved for a private function. Unsurprisingly there is a nautical theme, but it is subtle to fit in with the gastro pub surroundings. I was one of three customers, which I found surprising on such a warm and sunny day, but it still took a few minutes to be served. To be fair the barmaid was busying herself with cleaning glasses and the barman was in the back making some sort of coffee/chocolate/hot water concoction so I thought the wait was just. Thankfully I had plenty of time to note the presence of some premium draught products and six hand pumps. The Doom Bar was off, but the other five were drawing Adnam’s Gunhill, Southwold Bitter and Ghost Ship alongside Shepherd Neame’s Spitfire and Master Brew. During my visit there was some low background music playing, but I didn’t spot any other electrical distractions such as televisions or gaming machines. This is a pub to include on a crawl of the area, but I wouldn’t make it my final destination because, apart from my first view of London for many months, I found it a little bland.
