The Cricketers, Worcester

A small one-roomed pub, tucked away in a side street close to the city’s shopping precinct. The cosy L-shaped interior features a low ceiling with heavy wooden beams, dark wooden panelling and an attractive curved bar. Seating is all very traditional, mostly based on beaten copper tables and round stools. Impressively, they’ve got the lighting spot on, with a number of wall lamps providing a comforting golden glow. As the name suggests there is a sizeable collection of cricketing memorabilia, apparently collected over a twenty-five year period. Beers at the bar were Black Sheep Bitter, Spitfire, Old Speckled Hen and a serviceable pint of Purity ‘Mad Goose’, served by a friendly young barman. My only niggle was a radio playing in the background – a real pet hate, unfortunately. A little quiet on my Monday evening visit, but there were definitely one or two characters amongst the clientele. Overall, I rather liked the place. It’s not a ‘must visit’ from an ale drinker’s point of view, but fans of traditional interiors will be happy here. I’d certainly call again if I was in the area.
