The White Hart Inn, Brecon

Slightly over-shadowed by The Star, next door, but a decent enough pub in its own right. It’s well described by others, below. Food was basic pub grub at a reasonable price, though the quality varied depending on what you had – my lasagne was almost cremated, though tasty, while my wife’s pie was small but well cooked. The staff and locals were more welcoming than we’d experienced in some other pubs in the area, and water and treats were provided for the dogs, who seemed more welcomed than children. Ales on were Felinfoel Dragonheart, Wainwright’s Gold and Pedigree, all in perfect condition. From keg were two from Tiny Rebel – Clwb Tropica and Rebel IPA – plus 4 from Thatcher’s, Carlsberg, Poretti, 1664, Guinness and Fandango. The TV was switched off, and conversation was inclusive. Worth visiting both of Talybont’s pubs as they complement, rather than rival each other.

A substantial old stone building beside the canal, with "assorted nooks and crannies" as described by Steve below. There are a few bench tables at the front, but the garden beside the canal is worth having a look, even if you don't sit there to drink your beer. The bar is central and immediately inside the front door, but the hand pumps are around to the right: seven of them (see photos), with six beers on at the time of my visit. The walls are a mixture of rustic plaster and bare stone, with lots of pictures, bric a brac and jugs. If I had a complaint it would be that the beers are all pretty average and run of the mill; there's nothing that makes you go, "Ooh, they've got that - I must have some". Felinfoel and Brains are never going to shake the world, and although I like Wye Valley Bitter, I'd had plenty of that in Herefordshire; I would have liked something else here in Wales.
