Anchor Inn, Weston Super Mare

A scruffy roadside pub as described below. There is a cluttered car park at the side, but there isn’t much by way of garden. The front rooms have been knocked into a single L-shaped bar with two stone fireplaces, small TV screens at each end and a carpet that looks like it’s on its last legs. There is a small games room at the back housing a pool table. There is also a separate bar at the rear, The Smugglers’ Bar, though this was closed when we visited. They host karaoke, disco and party nights for their local cadre, while The jukebox was spewing the most awful pop music when we were there. A few elderly locals were drinking at the bar, while a solitary mother sat nursing her offspring on the comfy chairs by the door. No real ale was available, just a keg range of Carling, Henry Weston’s, Inch’s, Madri, Heineken, GK IPA, Ice Breaker, Guinness and San Miguel. No food was available during a lunchtime visit. Outside it looks attractive, but inside it’s shabby and disappointing.
