The Newcastle Hotel, Morpeth

The Newcastle Hotel is a pleasant pub / hotel on the main street in the centre of Rothbury overlooking the Market place. A traditional two bar pub set up with a plain public bar and then a separate smarter lounge / dining area with a bit more character. No garden that I could see, but there are some external tables and these were well utilised by drinkers, as was the green village square opposite the pub when the sun was out. Each bar has three hand pumps and for our week in Rothbury the local Coquetdale Thrum and Northumbrian Brewery Blonde were available alongside a very well kept Box Steam Brewery Funnel Blower. This represented probably the best ale choice to be found in the four Rothbury pubs whilst we were there. We also ate here one evening as well and was the best meal we experienced in the village. It was also good to see the Newcastle Hotel well supported by an eclectic mix of locals, tourists and ramblers.
