The Black Bull, Hexham

A good-looking village pub which has turned itself into a hotel. It's very smart, with prices to match. There's no sort of pub atmosphere, and I imagine local drinkers would be likely to frequent the Grey Bull rather than its Black neighbour, but it wasn't open in the afternoon. Although there are a couple of hand pumps on the bar counter-cum-reception desk, only one had a pump clip showing, the other being hidden behind a leaflet or menu of some sort when I approached. Service was friendly and the beer in good nick, but at £2.20 for a half, I'll not be back any time soon. Date of visit: 2nd May 2017

Behind the attractive terraced stone facade, one finds a 'L'-shaped and partially modernised bar with sports TVs and a pool table. Separate lounge behind closed glass doors. Tidy beer garden to rear. One of the two handpumps was working, offering Old Speckled Hen (£3.50). Overall, a slight disappointment, but it was busy enough with regulars.
