The Old Coach House, Southwell

A traditional and cosy street corner pub situated a few minutes stroll away from the High Street, but well worth making the effort to get to with it’s multi-roomed interior and friendly young barman. In fact he even asked if I was a member of Camra and gave me a discount. I’ve no idea what alerted him to that possibility. It’s divided in to several different rooms internally as mentioned, none particularly large and all broadly similar in terms of décor. Old flagstones and quarry style tiling were on the floor, along with a few oak beams on the ceiling, and the walls were a mixture of rough white plaster and exposed brickwork, along with dark blue and dark green paint in places. There was something of a musical theme in places, with a piano and a number of guitars hung on the walls, as well as a large cast iron range fire which even included what I assume was a bread oven. A room off to the side had a wood strip floor and a darts match in progress, whilst other bits and pieces on the wall included various items of brewery memorabilia, pictures and brass taps. Beers on tap were Ossett World Hop Series, Oakham JHB, Timothy Taylor Landlord, Magpie Satellite Wind, Little Brewing’s Rambler and Jacaranda Kestrel’s Flight. Cider selection was perhaps a little less impressive with just Old Rosie, Inch’s Medium Apple and Lilley’s Mango. Overall, a pretty decent little pub and well worth checking out.

Nice old pub largely unimproved (well since the 1980s) nice banter among the locals, six pulls of mainly local stuff, not a bad pub.

A good traditional pub and well worth a visit. We called on Saturday lunchtime and to our dismay it was closed,the pub didn't open until 2pm. The pub doesn't serve food, so maybe that's the reason for their late opening. The bar faces you as you enter and has some settling areas plus another three separate rooms, one of which has a cast iron stove. There were six handpumps. I went for the Belvoir Mild and Oakham JHB.
