The Hogs Head, Nottingham

The fact that it is now trading as the Hogs Head Hotel tells you what the main focus is of this one and it is accommodation and food. We stayed here for two nights in the B&B accommodation and as a B&B it was brilliant and fantastic value for the £60a night we paid. Very comfortable modern rooms and an excellent characterful bar area which serves very good home cooked meals at reasonable prices. But on the beer front it’s not such a good story. Only one ale handpump on the bar which is Old Speckled Hen. Unfortunately what I got served on my first night was clearly the end of the barrel and returned promptly and it remained off for the duration of my stay, which basically left Keg Bass for the bitter drinker. So by all means come here to stay in the B&B or eat in the bar. But as soon as you have finished eating head out up the road to the excellent Gate Inn, especially as the Hogs Head shuts down soon after the food service ends at 9.30pm. But if you are just looking for an ale then my advice would be to not walk any further than the Gate Inn down the road.

The Hogs Head is located five minutes away from the main road cutting through Kimberly and a ten minute walk from the centre. Located just next to A610 the Hogs head is a roadside pub that technically comes under Awswrorth. A large looking building we entered into the main bar area which was carpet and quite warn around the edges. There were lots of tables and chairs and they all had menus on so food must be big here in the day, there was also another room down some steps but we did not venture through here to see what it was like. The beer choice was quite poor with only two hand pull but only dispensing a single Doombar. They did however have the new Guinness Golden Ale on Draught that I wish I had gone for. The Doombar was £3.05 and in quite a tired state, and very under conditioned. The pub was almost empty on a Saturday evening but it is quite out of the way and more orientated to passers-by looking for food in my opinion. It was an ok place to sit and have a beer but was looking a little tired and the beer choice was really bad. Probably wouldn’t bother with this one again as there are far better in the surrounding areas.

The Hogs Head is a large pub that is situated at the top end of main street,the pub is also easily found if getting off a bus in Giltbrook and a short walk down awsworth lane. Once inside there is a decent sized irregular shaped room,the room is carpeted and has a drinking area to the front which has bench seating and small stools and small tables,the rest of the room is set aside for diners with normal tables and chairs,there is another room down a few steps to the left. There were three pumps on the bar with two unclipped and the other turned round,i asked for a drink of real ale but was told we are doing a changeover of real ales,thats a new one on me. I had a a drink of Kimberley Dark which went down very well,the other keg beers were Kimberley bitter and GK IPA smooth. The pub does accommodation and there is a large garden to the side which would be nice in warmer weather. This is a comfortable pub,but not really my sort of pub. Pub visited 28/2/2015
