I called in recently, having heard that The Wellington had re-opened after a refurb and could be a possible addition to the Leeds real ale circuit. Situated on the edge of the city’s financial and legal quarter and close to Holbeck Urban Village and the new riverside housing developments, it’s pretty obvious where the core clientele comes from. Internally, its essentially one open-plan space, but with a sizeable raised area to the left and having the feel of several discernible drinking areas. Décor wise it’s a bit like an ‘emo’ version of Laura Ashley: A predominantly purple colour scheme, with dark floral wallpaper, plus lots of dark wood. It’s also one of those places that seem to have more sofas than is necessary. The three real ales on offer during this visit were Leeds ‘Pale’, Shepherd Neame ‘Spitfire’ and Brains’ ‘Reverend James’. Opting for the latter, it was in good condition, if a little cold. The young barman that served me was friendly and welcoming. Atmosphere wise, it was a little muted, as you’d expect mid-afternoon on a Tuesday. Drinkers were mostly ‘suits’ on extended lunch breaks, spouting the usual corporate bollocks. Unfortunately, there was also the annoying combination of piped rock music and volume-less Sky TV, showing on the two monitors. Does anyone else hate that? The Wellington serves food between 12-8 pm and promotes live music on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights - possibly aiming at the city’s large student population. It’s unlikely I will call again. The pub is about a third of a mile from the city’s train station, but on a road heading out of the centre, which makes it more of a destination venue, rather than somewhere to spontaneously call in, if passing. It’s an OK sort of place, but as there are much better beer led pubs, on routes to and from the station, the chances of a return visit are slim.
