The Gate House (JD Wetherspoon), Doncaster

The Gatehouse is a Wetherspoons with a serving counter up the left that faces high tables up the centre and banquette booths up the right that run to open plan standard tables and chairs at the rear. The counter supports two banks of five hand pumps that were drawing the usual three plus Brain’s Rev James, Bradfield Farmer’s Belgian Blue, Salamander Brewing’s Golden Salamander and Python Porter as well as Welbeck Abbey Brewery’s Lost Boys. My visit was on a Tuesday evening when a few old boys were enjoying the cheap booze, but not a lot else was going on.

Doncaster's second remaining JDW is set down a pedestrian street. It's a fairly typical square room and wasn't as manic as the Red Lion. The ten hand pumps had two unused, the IPA version of the JDW Trio Of Doom, Acorn Gorlovka Imperial Stout, Robinson's Trooper, Milestone Lock Keeper, Dukeries Lord Furnival and the Banks's Alpha 5 Pale Ale. I went for the Acorn Stout (£2.25) which was excellent. All in all I thought this was a decent town centre Spoons.

Standard issue modern 'spoons, all very anonymous both inside and without. Boisterous atmosphere when I stopped by on a Saturday afternoon, with several large groups in. Fair selection of real ales from the ten handpumps, with a few festival beers (e.g. the Hyde's Bruges, £2.09).

Fairly large and modern Wetherspoon's that had a good selection of guest ales.
