The Bransty Arch (JD Wetherspoon), Whitehaven

Named after one of Whitehaven's best known landmarks that crossed Bransty Row in front of the pub and carried coal over it to ships waiting in the harbour.Not the largest Wetherspoons around but was pleasant and bright with an interesting selection of real ales to choose from.Tried a Norwegian Brown ale and an Oatmeal stout both of which were spot on.

If it wasn't virtually next door to a disused bus station, you would guess that this is exactly what this building once was. However, looks don't deceive, and you just end up wondering how Whitehaven ended up with two bus stations almost side-by-side. Anyway, the smart interior is much more modern than the 1920s façade would suggest. Airy feel in the main seating zone, with a very unusual false ceiling covering a space nearer the bar. Small lounge area with coal-effect fire at the back. 12 handpumps on the counter, including a good pint of Yates of Cumbria Golden (£1.99).

I was never a fan of this pub. but they have made a real effort to improve Minuses - not enough staff at busy times means you wait for ages, also they don't serve people in turn, one of the supervisors has a real attitude Pluses - great selection of beers and wines, chilled perfectly. Food the standard Wetherspoons fare, but presented well.
