Black Eagle, Hockley, Birmingham

This pub has a traditional back-street local feel to it. It's just a short walk from the Soho Benson Road stop of the Midland Metro (3 stops from the Snow Hill terminal). Don't let the slightly tired decor and furnishings put you off though. A central bar serves 4 compact rooms. The ale board displays the regular offerings of Martson's Pedigree, Timothy Taylor Landlord, Freedom Organic Lager and Ansell's MILD. The guest ales on my visit were Sharp's Cornish Coaster, Backyard Brewhouse Kris Kringle, Batham's Best Bitter (my choice, it was up to scratch)and Burton Bridge Stairway to Heaven. Worth a visit if you prefer the traditional pub over the more modern setting. GBG 2010 entry and current Birmingham CAMRA Pub of the Year.

Absolute gem of a pub, tucked away in old industrial Birmingham, between Hockley and Handsworth Fantastic attention inside, and its obviously much loved by the owners. What a difference it makes when somebody cares so much. Small but comfortable rooms with a larger dining area at the rear, its homely and a beautiful example of a back street boozer. Must be one of the best traditional pubs in Birmingham. Numorous interesting real ales, including local ones, and my Brew Dog Trashy Blonde was superb. As reviews below, a must!

Still as good as ever. A very popular pub in the back streets of Hockley. It is howver only a minutes walk from Soho Benson Road tram stop. Probably my favourite Birmingham boozer

Pretty much what Soup Dragon has said. I enjoyed my time at Black Eagle and Old landlady is very pleasant. Quite long way from Hockley centre but worth it for just for decors.

A detached cottage styled brick pub, with central entrance, decorative mural of a black eagle, etched window and beer garden. The interior has a nesting of rooms, served by a central wood and tiled bar. The first, small bar, is in white and wood panel, with beams. The other is in red and cream. The lounges are where the food is served and was in cream and wood panel. The decoration is supplied by lots of old photographs and prints - it is very traditional and has the occasional beer festival. The service was good, clientele more mature and the background music varied and a little loud. Beer; tap stuff, with a great Ansell's MILD and Bathams Bitter on handpull. Other real ales include an ok Timothy Taylor Landlord, there were also Pedigree, Brewdog's tasty Blonde, Acorn Barnsley Gold and Kinver Light Railway. A superb pub, worth visiting before a trip to the several pubs in Hockley. A must.
