The Tiger, Camberwell, SE5

A rather typical Antic pub,large with various sections although the large tap room is feature less with lots of unimpressive furniture and the servery at the rear with a decent mirrored back.Right at the front to the left is a section running along the pavement side ,while to the back left there is a raised section with lots of bench seating and an upright piano.Both these areas have some bric a brac,fireplaces unused and gloomy,moody lighting.It's shabby chic,with lots of exposed brickwork and flock wallpaper but the ale selection was uninspiring in Voldens Pale (owned by Antic),Wadworth Horizon,Small Beer Hazy and TT Landlord (clear but out of condition,tangy ,NBSS 1.5).There was a feeling of a lack of care,the manager seemed distracted and disinterested.I will keep walking next time.

Originally the Tigers Head, this pub dates from at least the early 19th century, though the gorgeous bottle green faience tiling is probably turn of the century, the Silver Buckle name seemingly replaced around 2010. This is no longer an Antic pub, but the bare brick below the picture windows is a vestigial reference to its former presence. With a visit available courtesy of Google, the floor’s bare boarded, dark grey walls, Eau de Nil ceiling, original bar array, traditional furniture and mixed light fittings; to the left-hand side is a raised snug which is more traditional and can be reserved for functions. Many – perhaps most – of the customers were students from Goldsmiths, partaking of the quiz, the quizmaster thinking himself quite the comedian and describing himself as ‘…a bald Northerner’. The cask choice at the time of my Wednesday 9.25pm visit amounted two reversed clips then just Volden Pale, £1.90 a half, ok and served by a despondent, uninterested barmaid. This place isn’t too bad, but not worth a special visit.

Large open-plan pub and somewhat souless inside, the seating was mostly of the normal type, the walls a mixture of bare brick and wallpaper. Four handpumps on the bar with Butbombe Original the only ale on, this was kept company by Old Rosie Cider, the remaining two handles bare. There were a few commonly found craft beers on tap along with more basic options. Premier League football was on the tv screens but the custom was fairly sparse. It's a pub I'd not likely bother with again.

This is a good-sized Antic pub – one of two in Camberwell – with a decent location opposite Camberwell Green. You enter into a large open-plan room with fine varnished dark wood flooring, large windows down two sides with heavy drapes and some funky wallpaper to the rear and left-hand side. The room’s spacious dimensions have allowed for copious amounts of seating to be arranged in several rows through the centre and along much of the perimeter, with standard tables and chairs mixing with low stools, some high tables and stools to the front and a couple of drinking ledges either side of the front door. The servery occupies much of the rear wall and has a tatty old wood panelled counter front with nice brass hand and foot rails and a grand mirrored bar back with a window through to the kitchen to one side. This part of the pub notably lacks any of the quirkier décor and furnishings that the Antic chain is generally known for, but there is a cosier side room to the left of the bar which has a few unusual items dotted around the wall in a lounge-like space with a good deal of extra seating across a split-level space that seemed much more peaceful that the busier, chaotic main bar area. TV screens in the main bar area were showing a live football fixture with the commentary on, which added to the general noise level. There were just the two cask ales available on this visit, perhaps because of a drop in demand during the week although the pub was pretty busy on my Thursday evening visit. The options on this occasion were Volden Session and Butcombe Original, and the former was in great shape, served to me by a friendly member of the waiting team. I quite liked this place thanks to its buzzy atmosphere and seeming lack of pretensions – something that can’t be said of all Antic pubs. The focus on just two ales may put some off, but the quality was very good so there were no complaints from me. This pub felt like an important part of the local community and I would be more than happy calling in here again the next time I’m passing through.

Quite an attractive emerald-green tiled and slightly curved façade. The typical Antic interior features three seating areas of differing sizes (two of which are located up a couple of steps) and a mix of furniture / eclectic decor throughout. Decent selection of six real ales on handpump, though, with Butcombe Bitter, Ghost Ship, Brains SA Gold and Trooper supplemented by BHB Cosmic II and a decent pint of Theakston's Vanilla Stout (£4.00).

The Tiger is a decent looking pub with some nice green tiling outside,the pub is situated on the corner of a very busy road junction. Once inside there is a single oblonish shaped room with the bar facing,there were a few chesterfield settees near the bar,with normal tables and chairs around the edge of the room. There was a good choice of real ales on the bar,i had a drink of beer from Beer Studio but can not remember the name of it but it was a nice drink,the other beers i noted were Butcombe Bitter,Brains Reverand James,Robinsons South Island and Deuchars IPA. There was some background music playing and the pub was quite busy. I was happy enough having a drink in this pub. Pub visited 13/9/2014

This used to be the Silver Buckle, a pub I remember from the early 70s. I read somewhere that they uncovered the original Tiger signage during a refurbishment and decided to revert the pub to its original one. Nice one. The exterior green tiling has been revealed as well, although it looks to have suffered a fair amount of damage over the years. The Tiger is now an Antic pub, so has been given a serious internal makeover. It’s bare-boarded now with what look like the original floorboards; there’s the usual array of leather sofas in the middle of the room, with a mix of assorted well worn standard tables and chairs. You also get all kinds of other stuff in these antic pubs – like the sideboard with newspapers on it and an eclectic range of imaginative decor. You can also expect a decent ale range from this growing chain. This one had five ales on – Brains SA, St Austell Tribute, Jennings Cumberland, Wadworth Swordfish and Yorkshire Terrier (£3.30 a pint or thereabouts). All the tables had candles on them, as well as one sheet menus. The menu isn’t loaded with pub grub favourites, but the “beefburger with hand cut chips” was there for £8.50. I’ve quite liked all the Antic pubs that I’ve visited, and this one is no different. They’ve all been fairly comfortable, and offer a decent range of ales. I don’t visit Camberwell often, but if I do find myself down this way again I’ll be certain to pay this one a return visit.
