Hooting Owl Distillery, York

A dramatic change from its previous nightclub incarnation, now taking the term 'lounge' to its extreme with leather sofas and similar furnishings throughout, though the tables on the pavement outside are nice in the sun and very handy if waiting for a bus. Showcases their spirits range but also includes some beers, with TT Landlord as a regular cask ale, joined on this visit by Brew York Karas. A couple of other Brew York brews were noted on the keg taps also. On the pricey side and a posh contrast to its near neighbour.

Mainly a spirits outlet for the on-site distillery making Gin, Vodka and Rum. It also serves wines and a selection of national kegs as well as two cask beers, one was reversed the other a tolerable Landlord. We were intercepted as we entered and seen to a seat, other punters were allowed to go to the counter and check out the range, not sure what went on there. A split level layout with the longitudinal counter at the front right and chair and table seating to the left with some sofas and “find it, fix it, flog it” furniture. Up a few steps is another seating area of leather based seating with a view into the distillery, and also a big screen. Decor is a bit eclectic or maybe just weird, with oddments in various styles including steam punk, a Harley Davidson was displayed as a raffle price. Toilets are upstairs at one end labelled ‘Kings’ or ‘Queens’, the urinals are cut down kegs. There’s a mezzanine level at the front as well. Not one for everyone.
