The Cornerhouse, Chester

There are three hand pumps here, with two at the time of my visit having Brains SA and Reverend James, the latter being pulled through, plus Dragons Breath from Plassey. I was enthusiastically offered a taster of the latter, and subsequently plumped for a half, which went down well. This is a pleasant pub, with its varied seating and different levels, a table football game at one end and a furiously smoking fire at the other. On the local real ale circuit they're up against it with Cellar, Harkers and the Mill all nearby, and they're not going to attract many with the likes of Brains on tap. But perhaps that's not exactly the client base that they're aiming for.

Tried to call in twice last week but it was closed both times. Still looks to be trading though. Must have unusual opening times.

Located in a detached and narrow row of brick built, timber and render faced buildings, with beer patio. The interior is simply long and narrow, as the building dictates. The decor is a mix of brick and red walls, with wood floor and ceiling beams, as well as a white wood panel bar. It has large windows, but there isnt too much of a view, but the walls do have some old photos of Chester. There is a pool table, the background music charty and loud. Service was good, the place itself, empty. The beer is all tap stuff, with Theakston's Dark Smooth being the best choice for me. No real ale. Too many decent real ale places really to bother with, this is for the younger person and the not so distinguishing palate
